Matariki & Dragon Boat Festival 2019

This event was organised by & Synergy Community Trust which to promote diversity and cultural exchanges and cohesion between different ethnic groups in the local community.

Twinking in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Maori New Year. Traditionally, it was a time for remembering the dead, and celebrating new life. In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again. Dragon Boat Festival is the traditional Chinese celebration to memorise the famous poet QuYuan by eating Zongzi and telling stories.

This event aimed to educate people the different cultures and to promote communications and cultural exchanges between different ethnic groups in New Zealand. On the event, we will have Maori, Chinese, Indian dancing and singing performances, as well as cultural experiences such as Matariki storytelling, Maori Hongi tasting, Chinese Zongzi tasting, painting, craft making, paper cutting, Bo Bing game, balloon twisting, facing painting and children’s entertainment.
